As history organizations look to their futures on the eve of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, they face new challenges in engaging visitors – and in particular their most dedicated advocates, their members. With external expectations for personalized onsite experiences growing in tandem with internal pressure to maximize revenues and expand audiences, successfully engaging members has become increasingly important for ensuring the sustainability of history museums and historic sites. In this keynote address, Colleen Dilenschneider will explore trends surrounding membership for history organizations, from what motivates members to join to the benefits they care about most – and how changes in these preferences point towards the future of membership.
