Applications for the 2027 Forrest E. Mars, Jr. Chocolate History Grant will be accepted through October 23, 2026.
Applications for the 2027 History Tellers Award will be accepted through October 23, 2026. Winners will be announced in February 2027 at the annual meeting of the Heritage Chocolate Society.
Created by Mars, Inc. and AMERICAN HERITAGE® Chocolate, this award recognizes the dedicated and inspiring interpreters, guides, docents, artisans and re-enactors who share the stories of America’s history.
Founded in 2025, this first-of-its-kind national award honors outstanding history tellers at American history museums or sites who inspire, engage and empower audiences to learn from the past so as to envision a better future. In addition to promoting the honoree and the site they represent, Mars will award the winner $15,000.
Mars will rely on the assistance of a distinguished selection committee composed of museum and history experts to select the winner. The committee will consider professionalism, accuracy and the quality of an applicant’s interactions with the public, irrespective of education, training, or the size, visitation, and resources of their site.
In addition to sharing information about the applicant’s site and what type of work they do there, we also request a video of the applicant in action in front of an audience, as well as a letter of recommendation from a manager.
Applicants must be a frontline history teller, regularly working with a public audience (either paid or as a volunteer), at a museum or historic site in the United States or its territories. Managers of guides and history tellers who intermittently offer public programs are ineligible.
