Supporting American History for Two Decades
Through longstanding partnerships with some of the nation’s most iconic historic institutions, Mars has supported educational programming, preservation efforts, and professional development across the history field through three impactful initiatives.
The meeting convenes leaders from our nation’s most revered historic sites and museums to collaborate and exchange ideas. HCS also serves as an incubator where several new products, publications and programs have been launched, including: AMERICAN HERITAGE Chocolate, an 18th-century-inspired chocolate brand in 2006, publications CHOCOLATE: History, Culture, and Heritage in 2009 and Great Moments in Chocolate History in 2015, The Forrest E. Mars, Jr. Chocolate History Grant in 2013, the “Global Stories Where Chocolate Sparked Discovery, Innovation, and Imagination” educator’s guide in 2018 with National Geographic, and the Made By Us youth coalition in 2019.

the Forrest E. Mars, Jr. Chocolate History Grant has funded and supported historic discovery and storytelling through the lens of chocolate, enabling thousands of individuals to experience the impact chocolate has had on our nation’s history and culture.
Nearly $700,000 has been awarded to support 69 grant projects from 36 organizations across North America.

This first-of-its-kind national award honors outstanding history tellers at museums or historic sites who inspire, engage and empower audiences to learn from the past and envision a better future. The recipient will receive $15,000 and promotional support for both themselves and their institution. The 2026 History Tellers Award was presented to Marcus Smith, a historian and docent at the DuBois Freedom Center in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
